The alley cut through white-washed walls, broken by the occasional door or gutter. The form hesitated only a moment, then slunk down the narrowness of the alley. Ahead, the soft click of footsteps drew him on, always one turn away, just beyond the edge of darkness.

The footsteps stopped, shuffled back and forth. He soft-footed forward, crouching at the corner, shuffling steps just beyond.  An almost-silent growl rumbled in his throat. One step. Another.

He leapt. Prey whirled, red eyes, black claws. Teeth sank into its neck.
