The dark came suddenly, shutting off the street from view until a lone street light sputtered to life. A light snapped on inside one of the houses and he watched a shadow cross behind the curtains.

Was it her? He wasn’t sure, chewed his lower lip in frustration. Should he knock on the door? Call? Sit impotent in the car? How was that different than what he’d done the last five years?

Would he do this for five more years? Could he?

As always, he hated himself, his indecision. Hated his tiny, dark, apartment. His crappy meals. The dust. Dark. Cold.

She would make all things better. Hot chocolate on cold evenings, snuggling in front of the fire. Feeding each other bites at restaurants. Dancing in the living room. Making love in the soft warmth of her bed. Their bed.

If only he knew her name…..

  1. That last line, wow! I love how vague this story was, so I wasn’t sure whether to feel sorry for the main character or to be wary of his intentions. I especially liked the flow and feel of the story matches the photo perfectly 🙂
