Guide for Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers

1. A prompt photo will be provided each Tuesday to be used as a base to your story. Please include photo prompt with your story.

2. Linking for this challenge begins on Tuesday and runs to the following Monday evening.

3. Please credit photo to photographer.

4. The story word limit is 100 – 150 words (+ – 25 words). Please try and stay within this limit.


The cow stood at the gate, waiting.

He headed towards the barn, deep brown eyes following his every step.

The rest of the herd has gone to market a month ago, the beef cows, at least. He’d sold the few milkers to another farmer before that. Sold the farm to a conglomerate. The dog died. It was a pretty bad month.

He was a farmer. Stock was stock. He raised cows for milk and food just like his Daddy and his Granddaddys back to whenever. Now, he’d lost his livelihood, a life he’d known since birth. Missy, last calf born, last link to his past.

He filled her trough.

“The trailer will be here about noon,” he told her. “New house for me, shed for you.” Touched her neck fondly.

He would always remember.
