NaNoWriMo Is Coming! 10-3-2017

I just realized NaNoWriMo is just around the corner.  Anybody planning to participate?

I have participated the last two years, but have never finished a novel. To be honest, I get so drawn into things in the outside world I freeze on the inside. Last year I was bogged down in the medicine fiasco and the year before my Aunt was in the hospital.

Sadly, I let myself be intimidated.

This year, I am better prepared. I have two unfinished novels from which to choose. Not just two, of course, but two from the previous Novembers.

This doesn’t mean I won’t panic and think either is (or both are) trash, but here’s hoping.

How do you center yourself in order to keep writing?

  1. Like you, I don’t. Outside considerations tend to distract me and then I lose the muse. One thing I’ve READ though (from actual writers … you know those books one can get that tell you ‘how’ to write) is that a good start is to dedicate a block of time (even an hour or two if that’s possible) where you determine to focus solely on the writing and nothing else. No distractions allowed. Also Stephen King said doing ‘free’ writing (I don’t know the official name, but it’s where you begin typing anything at all to get you warmed up) is something he does. Me? I go with that old saw about writing being 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. And I don’t know if you’re like me, but some days it just isn’t there at all. Maybe that’s why they suggest dedicating time to it and making yourself do it regardless. Anyway, if you find out, share the answer. I’d love to know too!
