This happened to me the other day, and I'm super excited about it.

What is that story?

“All grown-ups were once children… but only few of them remember it.”
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince

So true, he thought, watching his kids swinging on the monkey bars. He’d forgotten so much himself, so many precious moments and memories gone forever. Growing up was a gradual forgetting of what was important in life; what made life important.  Did one see the elephant inside the snake or a hat? Until his accident, he’d only seen the hat, but maybe now he had a chance to regain what he had lost.

They came running over, shouting for him. He couldn’t remember their names, but he knew they were his.  Just like he knew his wife but he could never remember her name. At first he hadn’t remember anything, but now, some days, little glimpses came through the dark veil covering his life Before.

His Doctors didn’t believe his memory would ever fully return, but he prayed night and day for them to be wrong. He wanted to remember so badly.

As he wrapped his children in his arms, he promised, ‘The elephant. Just remember the elephant.’
