What are your priorities in life?

Right now, my priorities in life are to get out from under the burden of debt and re-state my life in a better place. I keep hoping and working…. hopefully soon.

What is a simple truth people often seem to forget?

It seems to me the simple truth people seem inclined to forget is ‘Happiness is not material things.’ So many of us have been brought up to covet the neighbor’s nice cars, their bigger house, their 78″ Smart TV, their I-phone. Wife, mother, daughter or son. If only my child was as smart/talented/motivated as John’s.

We step on each other to climb the ladder of success only to discover the ladder goes nowhere but to more material things. Success does not necessitate happiness. If this wife isn’t as good any more, find a younger one, a prettier one. If your child does good, reward them with new Reeboks or a cell phone.

The rewards we seek are material things, not  realizing how shallow those things will become in our lives. Don’t like the I-Phone 5, upgrade to the 6 or the 7 or 8. Everything around us, preaches  ‘more is better.’ Come to our church because it is bigger than the others. Or has more stained glass windows, more people in the congregation. Go to our school because we have a winning football team or more students get jobs on graduation.

Why not go to our school to find out what you love in life; to meet people and explore your world?

Your child must go to this pre-school or they will never succeed in life. Sometimes, we forget that these things, too, are material. Will your child really fail because they didn’t go to ‘the’ approved preschool? Isn’t it better to teach you child about love and respect and tolerance rather than cars and houses and the fave toy of the year.

There is nothing wrong with getting the fave toy of the year unless it is the only thing you give your child. I don’t know what the fave toy of this year might be; I don’t have little children any more. I do remember when my kids were young, they marked every toys in the Christmas Catalogue as something they wanted. I knew most of the toys would fall apart or be broken or critical pieces lost almost before the wrapping paper was trashed.

I have been material, too. I see something I ‘love,’ and almost cry when I can’t get it. But I learned, and am still learning. Every day, I try to appreciate the wonder and joy around me, the happiness I feel walking with my dog, Evie.

I still get material things. We can’t live with material things, but we need to remember they are things, not happiness and not the important lessons of life.

What is your favorite Broadway musical?

I have only seen one Broadway musical in person and it wasn’t on Broadway. Regardless of my lack of Braodwayness, Phantom of the Opera is my one and always favorite. Erik, the phantom, is my kind of character; tormented, tortured and full of rage and pain. What writer doesn’t like a character like that?

Erik touched  me deeply, down in my tormented soul, his story settling in my bones and living with me since. I was involved in an on-line Phantom of the Opera RPG playing Erik and greatly enjoyed the chance to delve into the character. It was a roller-coaster ride, but boy was it fun!

I would like to see Les Mis and Wicked some day, but I don’t think those could knock the Phantom out-of-place as my favorite.

Write about a time when something scared you or you felt you were in the presence of true evil.

I’ve been scared many times. Like when I see a spider. Okay, I’m not as bad as I used to be about spiders as long as they stay out of my house. They have their place and I have mine. Still, the thought of running into a spider’s web makes me shiver. Or clinking up the first hill on a roller-coaster. Taking a test for which I hadn’t studied.  Going someplace new. Going somewhere on my own. (I am most over the last three now.)

The one time I felt terrified, however, was as a teenager. Back then (when the dinosaurs roamed), I could ride my bike up and down the road (we lived on a narrow back road) for hours without my parents worrying. It was dusk. I was riding my bike away from the house, wanting to take one more rush down the opposite hill before I went home. As I came to a curve, I stopped, overcome with a feeling of dread. From inside the trees by the side of the road, I could feel the purest form of evil I had ever imagined, more than I had ever imagined.

Something, or someone, was watching me with evil intent.

I spun my bike around and rode home as fast as I could, running into the house. safe only once the door was closed behind me.

It was a long time before I was able to go outside at dusk.

If you had to choose one book to take onto a desert island, which one would you choose?

This is a hard question and yet, it is easy. Books used to be my shelter against the world. I felt if I had all my books around me, I was safe. They were friends standing between me and my fears.

In the last year or two, however, my life with books has changed. I realized that I was holding onto the physical book when what I needed to do was hold onto the story. I didn’t need to have the book on my shelf to have the story inside me. Since then, I have donated about 95% of my books. Every couple of months, I feel the need to sort through the books left in order to donate any I no longer need.

The change has been enlightening. And freeing. I still have the stories, but no longer have the books cluttering my shelves.

If I had to take one book, however, it would be The Little Prince by  Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Those of you who follow my blog probably know this. I have written blog posts based on quotes from the book. And plenty of Quotes of the Day.

The Little Prince makes me glad, makes my cry and makes me think. What more can you ask of a book?

How do you deal with negative people?

I used to be a negative person myself so I understand the mindset. Now, I work hard to be positive. When I encounter negativity, I tell them to think positive. What will be will be. If things don’t work out now that means there is something better out there for you. Sometimes people listen, sometimes they just look at me like I’m crazy.

Either way, the choice is theirs. All I can do is speak up.

What are you listening to today?

On the way to work, the radio because I was too tired to pull out my phone and listen to my playlist. When I do listen to my playlist, I have been playing “Bat Out of Hell” and “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” by Meatloaf, “Brandenburg Concerto No 5” and “Cello Suite 1 by Bach,” “So What,” by Pink, “Can You Read my Mind,” by The Killers and various Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Boy George.

If only I could have stayed in bed this morning and just listened to music…..

How motivated am I to change something important in my life?

I like to think I am extremely motivated. In my mind I am. I keep telling myself that I don’t want to end up like my Aunt, wheel-chair bound and unable to do anything. I want to enjoy life at her age (82), still able to take care of myself. So I keep telling myself I need to get fit again, get fit and stay fit, but when it comes to actually exercising, I fail to implement my plan.

I do walk my dog most days and most walks are an hour or more. So, I am getting some exercise, but I need to get back on track with the rest.

Here’s hoping I can focus my body with my mind and get going.

What do you see right now?

I see, joy of joy, my desk at work. Second day back and raring to go! Not.

I am glad to be back, but I’d still love to be home. My puppy misses me as do my cats.

But, back to what I see.

You can’t tell, but the white screen to the right is where I am typing this post.
