It happened the day the rhinos came. I unloaded the pair into the settling-in pasture with no hope that, if Mom got pissed, the fence would hold her. Supposedly she was gentle as a lamb. A huge, thick-skinned Mom of a lamb with a baby to protect. What were the odds?

As soon as she settled,  I saw Rachel standing on the far side of the road. Standing across the dirt, meant bad news. Fists in pockets, I headed her way.

“Rach.”

“Johnny.”

Raised eyebrows.

“The… unicorn died,” she blurted.

“Frick.”

Raised eyebrows on her side of the conversation. “She was our biggest attraction.”

Redundant. “I know.”

“She was the only reason we remain in business.”

Redundant two. “I know.”

“What are we going to do?  If park sales drop any more….”

I scanned the area, biting my lower lip like the bad habit it was. What could we do? Without Lucy, this Park was a doner. We were doners.

I clicked my tongue, eyes falling on the newest members of the family. Horns.

“Do we still have any of that white paint?”
